What if the Abyss's appearance isn't random? Please close my theory right now if you haven't finished the game yet! I apologize in advance for any translation errors; I'm from another country and don't speak English well.
The game ends with Swann finally returning to the Abyss, and Kat calling out to find her. When Swann falls into the Abyss, the game ends. But what about the Abyss itself? What is it hiding? Throughout the game, the Abyss has been demonstrating its full power. Considering Kat and Cory were trapped in the Abyss for 27 years, how does Swann expect to save Kat, let alone himself? The shadows of Kat and Cory appear in the game, as if revealing another reality—the Abyss. At the very end of the game, we see the shadow of an adult Swann. Does this mean the Abyss records everyone who has fallen into it, and in what state? After all, Kat cut her hair in the Rapunzel chapter, but we see her shadow with it.
I'm almost certain that the Abyss is somehow connected to the ability to alter time and has the power to manipulate it. Perhaps offering something to the Abyss can return a person to reality and alter it. After all, how then can one explain that many things that fell into the Abyss later ended up in a box? Something anomalous is clearly visible on Swann's video camera, as the filming effect begins to distort.
Now a little about my favorite character – Kat. In the chapter about Rapunzel, Swann finds candles and other witch paraphernalia on the nightstand in her room. Kat even mentioned strange dreams in which she smells the Abyss and sees herself among the witches. We also find a book next to her desk containing a poem Kat wrote about a certain girl – Celine. Little is known about Celine; in the cabin when we first enter, we find an excerpt from her poem.
Remember how the girls chose their animal symbols? I think Kat's choice of a raven is no accident. After all, a raven isn't just a symbol of death, but also of reincarnation and rebirth. Now a little about Velvet Cove. This small town is located in Michigan. The history of this state is somewhat similar to that of the ghost town of Pasani. It is the source of many legends of witchcraft. Perhaps the Abyss can influence people's behavior; there were moments in the game when the girls seemed filled with rage. A key scene is when Kat, enraged, turns to Cory at the end of the game and pushes him into the Abyss (this depends on the player's choice). It's as if something other than Kat is speaking within herself. Perhaps it was Celine, who used to live in the cabin and hold her covens, speaking within herself.
